Amateur Drama at its very best
To watch a performance by an amateur dramatics society is to sit on a knife-edge of triumph or disaster. It is a shared experience, exciting for spectators and actors alike. For those who have never been there could be no better place to start than with Funtington Players, a group with a reputation for producing first class plays, the most recent being their hugely successful production of Round and Round the Garden by Alan Ayckbourn, directed by Leafy Scott. Jono Oswin was extremely good as Norman, determined to seduce his wife’s sister, Annie, played by Linda Hull, with just the right amount of angst, torn between her desire for a ‘really dirty weekend’ in a hotel and loyalty to her shy suitor, Tom, played convincingly by Mark Weeks. Susie Wilde, as Norman’s wife Ruth, was, by turn, both suitably resigned and dazzlingly provocative and sexy while Paul Pridmore’s martyrdom as Reg, coupled with the irritation felt by his wife Sarah, played by Heather Birchenough, stuck in one of life’s ruts, was soberingly realistic. In short, it was a perfect amateur dramatic experience and the audience got what it came for – excitement and laughter. I would recommend it to anyone.
